French Hunting Hound history can be traced back to 2500 BC. Just through natural selection, they developed closer to the breeds that we have today. What French Hunting Hounds really are is a short-legged version of a taller breed. French Hunting Hounds differ from English hunters in that in English hunting, different breeds of hunters are bred for hunting specific pray, the French hunters are not. As the breeds developed the dogs got smaller so that they could get into smaller spaces and so the people could keep up with them and that they’d be affordable. What we have today is really a large dog, bred smaller but retaining the keen sense of smell and natural tracking ability. You won’t find a foxhound, an otterhound or a harrier here since French Hunting Hounds are not particular about what they’re hunting — they just hunt. |
