Philip Reinagle
Scottish, 1749-1833

Philip Reinagle was a student of court painter Allan Ramsay. He studied at the Royal Academy Schools in England and became a portrait painter.

Soon after, he ventured into painting horses, birds and dogs on landscapes. Reinagle is best known for his series of twenty-four paintings of dogs engraved by J. Scott for the Sportman’s Cabinet. Ultimately he eliminated animals from his paintings and concentrated on landscapes. Reinagle exhibited over one hundred works at the Royal Academy.
