John Emms
Unknown, 1843-1912

John Emms was born in Norfolk, the son of artist Henry Wilson Emms. Early in his career he was employed as a studio assistant to Lord Leighton. From there he went on to become a prolific and well-loved artist.

He is predominantly known for his paintings of Hounds and Terriers and portraits of other purebred dogs.

Emms developed a bold and distinctive style of painting - he is known for his calligraphic like brushstrokes.

John Emms exhibited nearly three hundred paintings at the Royal Academy. In 1875 three of his paintings were presented at the prestigious London The Beauties of the New Forest exhibition.
