English, 1824-1908
George Earl was the father of famed artists Maud Earl (also featured in the AKC collection) and Percy Earl and the brother of the popular animal artist Thomas Earl. He is known mostly for his paintings of sporting dogs which comes as no surprise as he was an avid sportsman. His most admired work is believed to be The Field Trial Meeting, depicting the important field trial personalities of North Wales at the time, accompanied by their dogs. Earl exhibited nineteen paintings at the Royal Academy, only two of which were of dogs. His series of dog portraits from the 1870s illustrated the now rare volume, Champion Dogs of England. |
