English, 1808-1893
George Armfield was born in London, where he lived for most of his life. In addition to being a popular painter he was also an avid sportsman. Between 1830 and 1839 he exhibited as G.A. Smith. Known especially for his smaller paintings of terriers and spaniels hunting, Armfield’s staccato brushstrokes brought life to his subjects. He produced a massive amount of work and exhibited more than thirty paintings at the Royal Academy. He also exhibited regularly at the British Institution and at Suffolk Street. |
