Edmund Henry Osthaus
German-American, 1858-1928
Such luminaries of the Industrial Revolution as the Vanderbilts and the Morgans commissioned Edmund Henry Osthaus. He also created a series of postcards and prints for DuPont.

Born in Hanover, Germany in 1858, Edmund Henry Osthaus studied at the Royal Academy in Dusseldorf with the likes of Andreas Muller, Peter Jansen and Christian Kroner. In 1883 he immigrated to America joining his family in Wisconsin.

From 1886 until 1893 Osthaus served as the Principal of the Toledo Academy of Fine Arts in Ohio. At the Academy he developed his focus on hunting scenes and primarily, dogs.

His passion for this subject matter led Osthaus to become one of the founding members of the National Field Trial Association. He was well recognized around the country and in 1911 he built a studio in Los Angeles. He also built homes in Ohio and New Jersey and a hunting lodge in Marianna Florida where he died in 1928.
