English, 1802-1873
Edwin Landseer was one of the most famous of animal painters. He was the youngest son of the engraver John Landseer. Encouraged by other artists such as Benjamin Robert Haydon he started painting as a child and actually exhibited at the Royal Academy by the time he was thirteen. The demand for his paintings increased extensively in that he was one of Queen Victoria’s favorites. Landseer’s knowledge of drafting lent to his ability to capture his subjects in his insightful and unique style. Elected P.R.A. in 1865, he was forced to refuse the honor due to his ill health. The Royal Academy exhibited more than one hundred and seventy of his works. |
